Project Outline

The Power to Transform project traces the development of stage cloths alongside the scenic artist profession in Britain, from the mid-17th century to the present day.

Its aim is to ensure the transmission of the legacy of extant cloths, of scenic artists and their traditional stage cloth painting skills.

Oral histories of scenic artists & painters, production staff and set designers who have a direct link to traditional painted stage cloth methods and who work in the modern environment is a key part of the project.

The project will culminate in a book and an exhibition at The Hunterian which will explore their significance to our cultural heritage.
